Somatic therapy is another treatment that is very effective with trauma due to traumatic stress getting stuck in the body. Bodily-based treatments help clients increase awareness of their physical sensations and release the unpleasant sensations, which are often unconscious and physical manifestations of the traumas.
Some of the physical sensations in response to stress or trauma might be jaw clenching, tense shoulders, stomach aches or back aches, which are often unreleased emotions. It is common for the brain to detach from the emotional experience of traumatic encounters, but the body does not forget the traumas. Somatic therapy assists with processing the unpleasant feelings and sensations associated with the traumas.
